1. Foundation

The predecessor of Faculty of Social Science is Faculty of Society, Thanh Hoa Pedagogical College. On September 24th, 1997, under the Prime Minister's Decision No. 797/TTg, Thanh Hoa Pedagogical College merged with Thanh Hoa College of Economics – Technology and College of Medicine to become Hong Duc University. On January 17th, 1998, according to Decision No. 138/TC/UB of the Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, Faculty of Society was renamed as Faculty of Social Sciences. Along with the development of Hong Duc University, Faculty of Social Sciences has become one of the critical training and research center in Thanh Hoa.

3. Key Achievements

Over the past 20 years, under the leadership of Hong Duc Party Committee, the Board of Directors, the support and cooperation of other faculties and functional departments, along with the incessantly efforts of lecturers and students, Faculty of Social Sciences has gain a number of important achievements:

- In training missions

In the first school year after the establishment (1998 - 1999), the faculty was entrusted to train the first bachelor program - Pedagogy of Literature. In the following school year, the faculty was assigned to train two more undergraduate programmes: Pedagogy of History and Pedagogy Geography, with both full time and part time training mode.

In the 2002-2003 school year, realizing the change of labor market, Faculty of Social Sciences decided to diversify the training majors. It started training other majors that have career orientation, such as: Literature, History (oriented to manage relics and landscapes), Geography (oriented to manage natural resources and environment) Vietnamese Studies (orientated to become tour guide), Sociology (social work). In 10 consecutive years, from 2005 to 2015, the faculty enrolled about 500 full-time students and 300 part-time students each year of the eight training programs.

The 2007-2008 school year marked a turning point in the development of Faculty of Social Sciences. The faculty was assigned the task of training a postgraduate program - Vietnamese Language. Up to the academic year of 2013-2014, the faculty has offered three more master training programmes: Vietnamese Literature, Theory and Teaching Methods of Literature – Vietnamese Language, Vietnamese History. Every year, the faculty has enrolled 20 students for each major.

The 2014-2015 school year was another leap in the growth of the faculty. It was assigned to train doctoral programme, majoring in Vietnamese Literature. And by 2017, two more majors had been assigned: Vietnamese History and Theory and Methods of Teaching Literature. Faculty of Social Science become one of two faculties at Hong Duc University that has full level in training system.

Since 2011, following the cooperation agreement between Thanh Hoa and Houaphanh provinces (Lao PDR), Faculty of Social Sciences has got a new mission: teaching Vietnamese to Lao students from Sam Neua town (Houaphanh). Up to date, the faculty has continuously trained Vietnamese for hundreds of Lao students each year.

In brief, from a faculty that only train secondary school teachers, Faculty of Social Science has continuously expanded the training program. Currently, the faculty is providing 3 PhD programs, 4 master program, 8 undergraduate programs in various majors of society such as History, Literature, Geography, Sociology, Tourism, Vietnamese Studies. Faculty of Social Science is likely a miniature university of Social Sciences and Humanities.  In over the past 20 years, the faculty has provided to the society nearly 5000 graduates, about 300 masters and dozens of doctors. The quality of training is gradually improved. Seventy percent of graduates found suitable job after about one year from graduation. Many students become successful politician, managers, principals, teachers and businessmen.

- In scientific research activities

Beside training tasks, the faculty has consistently paid attention on activities of scientific research. Scientific research activities are determined for three main objectives: to improve teaching quality; to apply on socio-economic development; to promote potential and enhance research ability of lecturers.

Up to date, staff and lecturers of the faculty have conducted many important projects for Thanh Hoa province as well as Ministry of Education and Training. Moreover, the lectures have successfully guided students to do meaningful researches which are awarded by Ministry of Education and Training, the Young Science and Technology Talent Award. Annually the researchers of faculty have published hundreds of research papers in scientific journals, scientific conferences. In two annual issues of the Science Journal of Hong Duc University, namely Social Sciences and Humanities, Education and Management Sciences, the articles written by lectures of Faculty of Social Sciences play a pivotal role and highly evaluated by readers and scholars. The faculty has chaired and played a pivotal role in dozens of scientific conferences. Some prominent ones are: "Emperor Le Thanh Tong" (2002), "Celebrating 50 years of Dien Bien Phu victory (2004), "To Huu - Poetry and Revolution" (2005) "Thanh Hoa in the resistance war against the American imperialism" (2005), "Quoc Trieu Hinh Luat/ Criminal Codes of the National Imperial Court - Historical and contemporary values" (2007), "Thanh Hoa with 1000 years of Thang Long - Hanoi" (2010), "The theory of modern literary criticism - reception and application (2013)", "Ham Rong victory - 50 years in retrospect" ( 2015), "Promoting a good image of Thanh Hoa people in the hearts of domestic and international friends" (2015), “Studies and teaching literature on the topic of national history” (2019). More than 30 textbooks and monographs edited by scholars of the faculty have been published by national publishers such as National Political Publishing House, Hanoi National University Publishing House. Also, lecturers of Faculty of Social Sciences have significant contributions in many major scientific programs of Thanh Hoa province.

In short, Faculty of Social Sciences has been a leading organization in the activity of scientific research. It gradually becomes one of reputable research centers in the field of social sciences and humanities, not only at Hong Duc University, but also in the Province.

- In developing and improving quality of human resources

Over the past 20 years, Faculty of Social Sciences has actively implemented training plans, encouraged lecturers to improve their qualifications.  As a result, the faculty quickly become one of units at Hong Duc University with a large number of qualified lectures. If in the first academic year of establishment, there was only 1 doctor, then now (in 2016-2017), among the 75 members, there are 10 associate professor, 25 doctors. Ten young lecturers have been trained from reputable institutions in advanced countries such as UK, Singapore, China, Thailand, Taiwan.

With above achievements, Faculty of Social Sciences has become a comprehensive unit at Hong Duc university. In the past consecutive years (from 2010), the Faculty has been honored the title of Excellent Advanced Faculty by Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee.
